The accredited ENGLISH PHILOLOGY – LINGUISTICS master’s training program is coordinated with the educational system of the Republic of Serbia and the relevant accredited European and international programs. Master’s program in English Philology – Linguistics lasts for one year, i.e. two semesters. After completion of the academic training program of the second level, the degree of a master of philology is granted to students. The value of this training program is 60 points according to the European system, or 30 points per semester.
The training program consists of two mandatory courses, two optional modules, science and research work and final master’s thesis. Mandatory courses include the following academic disciplines: Linguistic Research Methodology; Academic Writing; Comparative Linguistic Studies. In each of the two modules, graduate students choose one subject (optional module 1: Semantics and Lexicology; optional module 2: Pragmatics and Analysis of Discourse, Socio-Linguistics and Methodical Theories in Philology).
Master’s degree training for English Philology is conducted by means of various active classes, lectures and practical studies, consulting and mentorship, workshops and research work of graduate students. In the course of studies, the candidate may choose the theme of the master’s thesis. Science and research tasks from the first and second semesters may be integrated in the master’s thesis.
This training program has a double purpose. On the one hand, it provides students with the ability to acquire additional professional knowledge and skills that will help them successfully complete the tasks for which they have been trained during the basic stage of higher education, in the field of education (profession of a teacher in pre-school institutions, primary and secondary schools, as well as professional pedagogic professions of English as a foreign language at other faculties), culture, publishing, translation, public communications, especially in the field of international communication, as well as all spheres that require professional profile of an English language specialist. On the other hand, this program also provides basic education for scientific and research work and gives the necessary knowledge and skills to master’s degree students choosing academic careers and scientific work.
Subject-specific competences gained by the student are as follows:
The ability to teach English language in pre-school institutions, primary and middle schools, as well as philology-related faculties as teachers of English as a foreign language.
The ability to work as a tutor at philology-related faculties if the student has enrolled in the doctoral program.
The ability to perform oral and written translation of all types of texts on all levels and at all types of institutions from English and into English.
The ability to work as a lecturer presenting information in English.
The ability to perform works at cultural institutions, publishing houses and mass media.
The ability to work as a junior research officer in scientific institutes, libraries and archives as well as take part in scientific projects.
The ability to work on development of professional methodical materials for pre-school institutions, primary and secondary schools.
The contents and structure of the master’s training program in English Philology corresponds to similar educational profiles in Europe and allow students to gain adequate scientific, professional and methodological knowledge and skills. The program is integral and exhaustive and in terms of its contents corresponds to updating of the program of basic academic training at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Alfa BK University.
