As of today, Serbia has about 12,000 IT specialists
working in about 1,500 companies including IT as well as banking sector, telecommunications, mass media, schools and universities; only a small share of them, however, work in economic organizations.
ABOUT THE FACULTY
The system of higher education in Serbia does not cover the annual demand for about 2,000 new specialists. In such development environment, the facilities of our universities are not enough to provide that many specialists for the IT sector. On the other hand, progressive development of our economy is not possible without strengthening of the IT sector.
In 2012/2013, the doctoral program in Information and Communication Technologies was launched. In the times of European and international integration processes, this undertaking will make a significant contribution to better understanding of the world we live in, European integration processes and prospects of our country in the developing world and the European context.
Candidates who have completed secondary education and passed the entry exam are enrolled in the basic academic training program with a duration of 4 years (8 semesters) under the Information Technologies training program with a total of 240 ESPB points; after defense of the thesis, they receive a diploma of higher education and the professional title of an engineer of information technologies with a bachelor’s degree.
Completion of basic academic studies for a total of 240 ESPB points serves as a prerequisite for enrollment in the academic master’s program with a duration of one year (2 semesters), rewarded with 60 ESPB points; after defense of the master’s thesis, the students receive a diploma of higher education and assignment of the master’s degree in engineering of information technologies.
Points earned in the course of bachelor’s and master’s programs (300 ESPB) serve as a prerequisite for enrollment in the doctoral program that is rewarded with a total of 180 ESPB points and lasts for 3 years (6 semesters). After the defence of doctorate, the student is awarded the diploma of graduation from the doctoral program and the degree of a Doctor of Sciences in the field of electrical technology and computing equipment under the Information and Communication Technologies training program.
The reasons for emergence of study of information technologies are linked to high interest and the demand of our society for engineers of information systems and technologies. As of today, Serbia has about 12,000 IT specialists working in about 1,500 companies including IT as well as banking sector, telecommunications, mass media, schools and universities; only a small share of them, however, work in economic organizations. The system of higher education in Serbia does not cover the annual demand for about 2,000 new specialists. ADVANTAGES OF THE FACULTY
Over the last ten years, the developed world has transitioned to information society, which was aided by quick and efficient development of computer sciences and technologies that have become an integral part of intense development of every society. In our country, development of the IT sector during this period was very small both in the field of application of computers and development of information systems and in the field of preparing personnel for professions of the future. Judging by the experience of countries with transitional economies, the IT sector in Serbia is still at the stage of its inception. This suggestion is further proven by the fact that most investments in the IT sector are aimed at procurement of equipment, i.e. creation of infrastructure. The infrastructure determines transition to the following stage, dominated by software solutions and information systems, which requires the necessary training of professionals in the sphere of information systems and technologies.
